Information for Incoming 6th Graders

Welcome to Pin Oak Middle School! We are thrilled for you to join our wonderful community of diverse students, caring teachers, involved parents, and active PTO volunteers! Speaking of the PTO, we have compiled this guide to make your child’s transition to middle school as seamless as possible. 6th Grade Activities:

POMS has dedicated 6th Grade Activities Chairs who can help you navigate your first year at POMS. Chairs will coordinate various 6th grade events, such as the 6th Grade Social, the 6th Grade Game Night, and the 6th Grade Tailgate at the Homecoming football game (dates TBD). If you cannot find what you are looking for in this guide, please reach out to your 6th Grade Activities Chairs, Shireen Meherali & Ashley Rushing.

School and PTO communications are streamlined into one weekly newsletter called the Charger Chatter. The Charger Chatter is emailed each Sunday to parents who have registered for a Membership Toolkit account at pinoakpto.org. If you have a Membership Toolkit account with another school, you can use the same credentials to log into the POMS PTO site. Students will also receive the Charger Chatter if their HISD email addresses have been added to their account. The Charger Chatter contains important information about school events, club and sports tryouts, fundraising efforts, and more. We also invite you to follow us across all major social media platforms @pinoakpto.

School Supplies:

Parents have the choice of purchasing school supplies from the POMS School Supply Li sts on their own or buying a prepackaged school supply kit from 1^st Day School Supplies. The deadline to purchase a prepackaged school supply kit is July 1.

School Store:

Incoming 6th grade students may pre-order items before the start of the school year. Students may pick up orders during their lunch period in the school store after school starts back in August. Refunds and exchanges are possible on items that have not been worn or washed with a receipt within 30 days.

The school store on campus will open during all lunch periods beginning Monday, August 24. Students may shop in the store during their lunch period for uniforms, school supplies, and fun spirit items. Cash and credit cards are accepted. The online school store is also open throughout the school year for parents to order school uniforms and spirit wear. Students may then pick up the items from the campus store during their lunch period.

Charger Camp:

Charger Camp is a student-only, half-day event for that takes place just prior to the start of school for 6th grade students only. This year, Charger Camp will be Thursday, August 6, from 9AM to 12PM. Please drop off your student in the front circle drive. Please call the POMS front office at (713) 295-6500 if you have any questions.

The POMS PTO is responsible for organizing various school events throughout the school year such as:

Incoming 6th Grade Social: Join incoming Chargers and their families to meet other Charger families, the school principal, and Pin Oak PTO board members to chat about all things Pin Oak. Held at the end of May before school lets out for the summer.
Auction: major fundraising effort where you can bid on fabulous items like weekend getaways, vacation home rentals, dining experiences from amazing restaurants, and more
Book Fair: weeklong event in the school library that encourages a love of reading
Charger Fest: festival held on a Saturday in the spring with food, games, prizes, raffles, obstacle courses, rock climbing walls, and other fun
Color Run: sociable held on campus during the school day in the fall where students can run around the track, win prizes, eat fun treats, and throw colored chalk powder in celebration
Kona Ice Fridays: cool treats available for purchase after school on the first Friday of each month

In addition to the events mentioned above, the PTO leads the Charger Commitment Campaign annually in October. The PTO commits to spend every dollar raised from the campaign in the same school year to ensure that your donation will be used for your own student’s experience and education at Pin Oak Middle School.

We could not offer these amazing activities and events without the assistance of our generous parents and supportive school community. We are always looking for volunteers to help at our next event! If you are interested in getting involved, there are always plenty of opportunities available! Reach out to the POMS PTO Volunteer Coordinator for more information or sign up to be notified of upcoming volunteer opportunities for the 2026-2027 school year. All volunteers must be registered and approved through VIPS. (VIPS approvals expire in the summer for the previous school year and you must go through the registration/approval process again at the start of each school year.)
