SUBJECT: Charger Chatter

March 19, 2023

Principal's Post

Dear Charger Parents and Families,

I hope you had a fun and restful Spring Break with your family and friends! We are excited to welcome our Chargers back and look forward to encouraging and celebrating their academic accomplishments in the coming weeks.

As a reminder, the Cycle 5 Progress Report window will close this Friday, March 24th and progress reports will be sent home on Thursday, March 30th. Cluster leaders will schedule parent conferences for any student in jeopardy of failing for the year. Please take time each week to review your child’s academic progress by accessing HISD Connect. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s academic progress, I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher or cluster leader.

This week, students in grades 6-8 will be taking the mandatory TEA Interim Assessments. These assessments are just one of several important tools to help identify how students are progressing on the learning standards. We only ask that they do their personal best.

What are Formative Assessments?

“A formative assessment is a planned process in which assessment-elicited evidence of students’ status is used by teachers to adjust their ongoing instructional procedures or by students to adjust their current learning tactics.” (Popham, 2011). These assessments, also called assessments for learning, inform teachers’ instruction, and provide students with feedback.  Students and teachers can use formal and informal assessment methods to measure progress and gather evidence that impacts students learning and instruction.

What is the rationale for giving the TEA Interim Assessments?

The Texas Education Agency creates these assessments, which are administered to provide teachers with timely information on student learning of standards taught since the beginning of the school year.  Teachers can create an effective review plan for STAAR for their students with the resulting data.

In the 2022-23 School Year, the STAAR assessment will:

  • Include new Technology Enhanced Items (TEI) that will make up at least 25% of the assessment
  • Transition to Online administration
  • Include a redesign of reading language arts (RLA) which will include revising and editing items in grades 3-8 and cross-curricular passages
    • More details on the redesign can be found on the Texas Education Agency website.

TEA INTERIM ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE

POMS will administer the TEA INTERIM ASSESSMENT the week of March 20th. Student testing locations will be shared via your student’s Team Time teacher and Mrs. Warren as we move closer to the testing dates.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Warren at AWARREN4@houstonisd.org or Mrs. Catoni at OCATONI@houstonisd.org

Mental health and wellness
LGBTQIA+ rights

Creative writing and art
Social justice
Community resources
Empowering community speakers

The groups are comprised of introductions, social time, programming, and small group, and are curated by Hatch staff and trained volunteer facilitators. Youth have access to role models and peer support and can participate in special projects and events, including Hatch Prom and walking in the annual Pride Houston Parade. There are no costs for any activities.

Say Something Anonymous Reporting

Pin Oak Middle School implemented the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System last October. Sponsored by Sandy Hook Promise, the program educates secondary students, educators and administrators on how to recognize the signs and signals of individuals who may be at-risk of hurting themselves or others and encourages them to report that behavior through an anonymous reporting system. The reporting system allows administrators and law enforcement to create effective interventions and help prevent violence, suicide, bullying, self-harm and other forms of threatening behavior.

Anyone can submit an anonymous tip by going to the program’s website (www.saysomething.net), calling the hotline (1-844-5-SAYNOW) or using the Say Something mobile app, available on the App Store or Google Play.

The Say Something program is provided through Sandy Hook Promise, a nation-wide non-profit organization focused on preventing gun violence before it happens. For more information, contact Anastasia Warren at 712.296.5600.
