Principal's Post

Good afternoon Charger Parents,

Congrats to our Pin Oak Cross Country Girls Team on their 3rd place finish! Tuesday is our first football game against Tanglewood and our volleyball teams take on Welch on Thursday. Let's get CHARGED and SHOW UP to support our POMS teams this week!

POMS Virtual Open House Tomorrow (September 20)

Parents are encouraged to take a picture of their student's schedule on HISD Connect Parent Portal. You may also download the free PowerSchool app on your mobile phone from the App Store or Google Play and take a screenshot of the schedule.

Please join your student's 1st period class by 6:20 p.m. You will follow your student's schedule and have a brief opportunity to meet each of their teachers and hear about course expectations. The purpose of Open House is to put a face to the name, receive contact information, and provide an overview of the class content and expectations for the school year. If you have individual concerns about your student, please email their teacher/house administrator directly, as these rotations are fast and we must stay on schedule.

  1. Grab your student's schedule (including teachers' names) from HISD Connect Parent Portal.
  2. At 6:00 p.m., join the POMS Virtual Open House Welcome Session.
(This link will be open until 7:30 p.m. for parents to enter to get questions answered.)
  3. At 6:20 p.m., go to period 1 by clicking on teacher's name.
  4. Repeat for periods 2 through 8 according to student's schedule.

Fire Drill #2

Tomorrow we will have our second fire drill. Before starting the fire drill, I will make a campus wide announcement to reassure students that it's only a drill and explain why we are practicing the procedures. Our goal is student preparedness in case of a real emergency.

Lunch & Learn

POMS parents are invited to attend a series of Lunch and Learn sessions presented by Principal Vela and campus staff.

The first event, Family & Community Engagement, will take place on Wednesday, September 22, from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Microsoft Teams. You will need to sign in using your student's log in and password.

Lanyards/IDs

All lanyards/IDs have been distributed (during Team Time) and are expected to be worn as your Charger is moving through our campus starting tomorrow. This is purely a safety procedure for both your child and our staff, not to mention it speeds up the lunch process.

Things to remember:

  • First lanyard and ID are FREE
  • SCHOOL-ISSUED lanyard and ID must be visible (top half of body)
    • 6th Grade: Charger White
    • 7th Grade: Charger Gray
    • 8th Grade: Charger Blue
  • Replacement lanyard ($2) & ID ($5) may be purchased from House office

Texas Education Agency (TEA) Beginning of Year (BOY) Assessments

Any student who did not take their STAAR Test(s) last school year is required to take the TEA Beginning of Year (BOY) Assessment(s) this month. We are conducting our TEA BOY Assessments the weeks of September 13 and September 20. Students required to take the BOY received notification from the House Assistant Principal and all students and parents affected received several emails over the last few weeks. Please email Mrs. Katty Warren if you have any questions.

Click on the chart below for a printable PDF.

Socioeconomic Information Form

Have you submitted the socioeconomic information form? All our forms are important, but this one impacts our funding! Please make sure that this form is updated or completed for the 2021-2022 school year. It is very important that we receive this form from everyone.

Complete and print the Socioeconomic Information Form in EnglishSpanishVietnameseor Arabic. Please return the signed form to the POMS front office or email to Mrs. Felissa Salinas at felissa.montanomarquez@houstonisd.org by September 20.

Please email Mrs. Felissa Salinas if you have any questions or need a paper form.

Health Inventory Form & Required Vaccines for 7th Graders

Please see the important info below this Principal's Post from School Nurse Thea Troetscher regarding the required Health Inventory Form for all students and required immunizations for 7th graders. All forms and records must be received by Monday, September 20.

COVID-19 Notification Changes

We will continue to follow the protocols shared in HISD's Ready, Set, Go Plan when a student is in close contact with a confirmed and/or presumed positive case. However, the district has informed us that we should no longer share the general announcement with the entire school community, and instead only communicate with those directly impacted. However, the HISD COVID-19 Dashboard remains updated on a regular basis and may be accessed to show current COVID-19 cases at each campus.

Please Donate to the Dawn Cortes Memorial Fund

It is with a heavy heart that we let you know that Ms. Dawn Cortes, beloved 6C Science teacher at Pin Oak, passed away on July 19, 2021. Principal Vela shared the announcement via School Messenger.

She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

In order to best serve the family, our PTO has decided to help provide them financial support.

Pin Oak PTO is collecting voluntary donations from the Pin Oak community until September 30, 2021.

Please donate to the Dawn Cortes Memorial Fund. All money raised will go directly to the family of Ms. Cortes.

Thank you so much!

If you have questions, please contact POMS PTO President Tricia Onufer.

REQUIRED POMS Health Inventory Form DUE TOMORROW (9/20)

You may recall your student bringing home a paper form at the beginning of each school year asking about any health issues which may affect their performance at school or in P.E. This year, we are trying to streamline and modernize the approach to gathering this information with a safe online form.

Please complete this POMS Health Inventory Form at your earliest convenience. All forms are due on Monday, September 20.

If you have any questions, please contact our POMS School Nurse Thea Troestcher.

7th Grade Immunization Requirements DUE TOMORROW (9/20)

Did you know that the State of Texas requires two additional immunizations for students to participate in 7th grade? And they are not making any exceptions this year. All 7th graders must have documentation of Tdap and MCV4 immunizations submitted to the district before September 20 or risk being removed from school.

Please make sure your child has had Tdap and MCV4 immunizations AND that you have submitted documentation to us before September 20. You may submit scanned shot records directly to the School Nurse at Thea.Troetscher@houstonisd.org or bring them to school.

Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements for Students Grades K-12

Please email School Nurse Thea Troetscher with any questions or concerns.

Volunteer to Help with POMS Lunch Duty

Mrs. Vela and the POMS admin team need your help during lunch duty to encourage students to throw away their trash and exhibit appropriate behavior.

Please also talk to your children at home about why it's important to respect their school campus and clean up after themselves.

Click here to sign up! You must be VIPS approved.

Questions? Please contact POMS Assistant Principal Johnny Morse.
