Hello POMS Chargers,
A little more normal finally kicked off this week! Sports practices, interest meetings, and meets have officially commenced!
We are also kicking off progress reports this week! The first round of progress reports will be distributed to students on Wednesday during Team Time. If you would like to check your child's grades at any time, please visit HISD Connect Parent Portal. You may also download the free PowerSchool app on your mobile phone from the App Store or Google Play to have your student's grades, attendance, and assignments at your fingertips!
You will remember that I mentioned that this school year would look different than last year. It is going to take more time, effort, and energy to adjust to the new health guidelines implemented to address the safety concerns, as we navigate the third school year to be affected by the pandemic with all students returning to in-person learning. Since I knew there would be a little bit of a learning curve for everyone, we have tried to ease into the changes slowly.
As you may be aware, TEA's accountability system is back and will take adjustment for your learner, especially when we have had almost two years of testing waivers. Our staff realizes that, and although we cannot lower the learning expectations or change state requirements, we will create tutorial opportunities so that all students are academically successful. Please check out your teacher's teams page on the POMS website for tutorial times that will be starting soon.
POMS Open House
We will be having a virtual open house on Monday, September 20 at 6 p.m. on Microsoft Teams. POMS PTO will also hold its first General Meeting of the school year immediately after the open house on Microsoft Teams. All parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Look for the link(s) and more information in the next Charger Chatter.
Lanyards/IDs
All lanyards/IDs have been distributed (during Team Time) and are expected to be worn as your Charger is moving through our campus starting tomorrow. This is purely a safety procedure for both your child and our staff, not to mention it speeds up the lunch process.
Things to remember:
- First lanyard and ID are FREE
- SCHOOL-ISSUED lanyard and ID must be visible (top half of body)
- 6th Grade: Charger White
- 7th Grade: Charger Gray
- 8th Grade: Charger Blue
- Replacement lanyard ($2) & ID ($5) may be purchased from House office
Tardies
Tardies start tomorrow. I have personally walked the campus from one end to the other and still made it to class on time, so your student should have no problem getting to class on time if they use their time wisely and not stop to visit with friends between the classes that require the most walk time.
Texas Education Agency (TEA) Beginning of Year (BOY) Assessments
Any student who did not take their STAAR Test(s) last school year is required to take the TEA Beginning of Year (BOY) Assessment(s) this month. We are conducting our TEA BOY Assessments the weeks of September 13 and September 20. Students and parents who are affected were notified last week. Students required to take the BOY received a letter on Tuesday afternoon from the House Assistant Principal and all students and parents affected received several emails over the last few days. Please email Mrs. Katty Warren if you have any questions.
