Principal's Post

Dear Pin Oak Chargers,

I can’t believe it’s almost Spring Break! The year has no doubt been a challenge, but it’s also obvious we’ve come a long way. I want you to think back to our August Connection Groups – we met a couple of days a week virtually with a small group of students. I still remember my group checking in, eating breakfast together, sharing concerns, and getting to know each other. One of the activities we discussed was a Virtual Locker. We placed pictures in the locker that represented us. Pictures of friends, hobbies, our pets, etc. It was fun to see and hear about the individual interests of each group member. It was easy to visualize how their locker might be decorated if we were in-person and things were normal.

As I walk down our Pin Oak halls, the lockers still line the walls in each House. They are empty and waiting to be decorated by you again. Usually this time of year, there are notes from friends, drawings, and pictures hanging in each one. Some are messy with papers hanging out each side while others have labeled folders and books perfectly lined up. I want you to think about what your virtual locker looks like now. What virtual messages are you listening to? Who are you talking to? Are you keeping positive images in your virtual space? Are you setting goals and writing them on stickies to remind you of what you are good at? Are you sending and receiving encouraging notes with your friends? Your heart is much like your virtual locker this year. I can’t wait until we are back to normal with full lockers lining our halls. Until then, please be protective of the messages, words, and pictures you are allowing to be placed in your virtual heart locker. #GetBetterEveryday

We have a few sporting events and meetings this week, so check out the information below. I hope you have a productive and enjoyable week!

Parents – Thank you for staying connected to our teachers, counselors, and administrators. We are here to help so please don’t hesitate to reach out.

MARCH IS SELF-HARM AWARENESS MONTH

Self-harm (or self-injury) is the behavior of hurting yourself on purpose to cope with emotional distress. This may include cutting, burning, scratching, and picking. Self-harm is more common than you might think. It is estimated that about 17% of adolescents have engaged in self-harm at least once with 5 to 8 percent of adolescents actively engaging in this behavior at any time. Self-harm is often followed by extreme feelings of guilt and shame, which may make it more difficult to seek help.

Signs of Self-Harm

  • Multiple scars or burns on the skin, especially in linear or neat patterns
  • Wearing long sleeves/pants, even in hot weather
  • Trouble with interpersonal relationships
  • Saying they feel hopeless, helpless, or worthless

The good news is that there are effective treatments available for those who self-harm. If you or someone you know is struggling with self-harm, know that you are not alone. You can text the self-harm crisis hotline at 741741, or call 1-800-273-TALK(8255) to talk to someone while remaining anonymous.
