January 31, 2021

Principal's Post

Dear Pin Oak Chargers and Parents,

I hope you are all doing well. It was good to pause Friday and think about how much we have learned and how far we have come together during this time of in-person and virtual learning. Our students and teachers have hit monumental milestones together. We are on pace with our curriculum and objectives. Our Clusters are continuing to reach out to families and students to stay connected. Our counselors are working every day to support students through emotional and physical obstacles.

Our PTO has been exceedingly generous with teacher grants, extra technology needs, outdoor seating, teacher treats, and the much appreciated air purifiers. Every detail and effort is having a positive impact on our Pin Oak Charger Community. I'm grateful and cannot say "Thank You" enough!

And now we move forward to Semester 2. We can do this! Our numbers show closer to half of our students returning for in-person learning. We are ready to welcome them and will continue to closely monitor and adjust our safety procedures.

Breakfast & Arrivals:

All students can grab breakfast, juice, and water before entering the building. They will be greeted by our wellness team at the door and have a quick forehead temperature check. Most of the students arrive around 8:00 a.m. and start heading to class at 8:15 a.m. You are late if you get to school at 8:30 a.m., so please be on time.

Students Will Need to Bring/Wear:

1. Mask (we also provide them)

2. Charged Device

3. Earbuds or Headphones

4. Backpack (we are not using lockers)

5. Blue/Grey/White Shirt or Sweatshirt

6. Class Schedule

Lunches:

The new lunch schedule was emailed to students. They look for their 5th or 6th period teacher. We ask students to remove their masks only at lunch while they are eating.

Dismissal & Pick-Up:

Our students are dismissed and picked up at 4:00 p.m. unless they are directly involved with a scheduled sport or program on campus. We are not offering After School Care at this time.

Chargers - Thank you for watching out for each other and your teachers. We will continue to wear our school colors for supervision, wear our masks, stay socially distanced, ask for help, be polite, and stay engaged with learning. We are so proud of you!

Also, this week is Counselor Appreciation Week! Let's be sure to share the love with Ms. Warren, Ms. Kingsley, and Mr. Mesa! Be sure to check out the new Counselor Corner section of the Charger Chatter!

As always, thank you,

Michelle Shoulders

Go Chargers!

This Week's Schedule:

Monday: BLUE

Tuesday: SILVER

Wednesday: BLUE

Thursday: SILVER

Friday: CHARGER DAY

*WE ARE HERE FOR YOU*

Are you struggling with your classes or virtual learning in general? Have you experienced something at home or in school that makes you feel uncomfortable? Are you overwhelmed with feelings of sadness or hopelessness? Do you worry about a friend? Have you been bullied at school or online by your classmates?

Middle school can be a stressful time. Problems can build up and cause you to lose sleep, fall behind in your school assignments, or even become depressed.

When you need to talk to someone, reaching out to your POMS Counseling Team is a great place to start. Did you know that we have a school counselor, a social worker, AND wraparound services manager on campus full time? Their sole purpose is to help students like you and to provide you with advice, support, and guidance. You can reach out to them whenever you'd like! Just use this Google form to get started!

Our new "Counselor Corner" section of the Charger Chatter will appear the first Sunday of each month, where we will be featuring info on a variety of topics that affect middle school students such as mental health, bullying, social media safety, anxiety, and depression.

We are here to listen to you, help you work through your feelings (even if you don't know what exactly is causing them), and get you the support you need to be a confident, happy, and successful student at Pin Oak!

Help is just a click away!

Hip Hop Hooray!

Meet POMS' New Hip Hop Teacher, Mr. Joel Rivera

A graduate of HISD's Westside High School, Mr. Rivera has over 20 years of experience in Bboy, House, and Contemporary movement. His highlighted performances include the 8th annual Folk Art Festival in China, Superbowl XXXVII/LI, Warp Tour 2006/2008, and MTV's America's Best Dance Crew.

Teaching and mentoring are Mr. Rivera's passions. We are so excited to welcome him to our Charger family!

Your PTO Dollars at Work

Thanks to the generosity of our Pin Oak Middle School community, the Charger Commitment Campaign raised $50,889.59. In return, our PTO made a commitment to spend every dollar of it during this school year, ensuring that your donation would be used for your own student's experience and education at Pin Oak Middle School.

Here's where your PTO dollars have been allocated thus far:

  • Grant for POMS Library
    • Purchased continued parts of current series in our library collection, replacement copies of damaged or tattered books, and bilingual editions of popular titles
    • Cost: $2,855.13

  • Grant for Science Class Instructional Resource

  • Windowed Face Masks
    • Clear window face masks for speech therapist, educational diagnostician, and teachers who have students with auditory impairments.
    • Cost: $352.00

Special thanks to our PTO Grants Buyer, Christina Lyster, and the POMS Business Manager, Tony D'Angelo, for their assistance in procuring these items which have been in short supply during the pandemic.

As always, thank you for your continued support of the Pin Oak Middle School PTO. For more information about giving to the Pin Oak Middle School PTO (including corporate matching and sponsorship opportunities), please visit pinoakpto.org or email our VP of Fundraising, Melissa Bayne, at fundraising@pinoakpto.org.

Teachers like Ms. Sanders (7A Science) are so grateful for the air purifiers the PTO provided, ensuring that every classroom is a safe place for teachers to work and students to learn.
